Coffee, business, pure and simple

I love to talk business, and i love to drink coffee... and on those rare special days, talk business about coffee. I expect tomorrow morning to be one of those rare and special days.

"no one buys coffee today. We buy an experience."
Seth Godin

The above quote comes from a post on Seth Godin's latest blog allmarketersareliars.com

Recycled toys. Mmmmm.

Toys. i like toys. i have lots of toys. There are lots of toys that i don't have. i don't play with toys, not anymore. Not that there is anything wrong with playing with toys. Just sayin.

How does a serial entrepenuer capitalize on his fascination with toys. Tommy and Sean at Happen Inc. Toy Labs have a creative experience that kids and adults love. Build a Toy from recycled toy parts, lots and lots of parts. Mmmmmmm.
The Toys over at ToyRobot look like they are already hibrids.

Step One: Get Tons and Tons of old toys.
Step Two: ???
Step Three: Profit.

Hehe. Toys. I like toys. Tokugawa Ronin is a toy? Wow, i don't remember seeing these at Toys'R'Us.

24 season three

Moments ago i finally finished. Reason why i haven't posted much lately? i've been deeply enthralled with season three of 24. i knew what to expect, an intense adrenaline rush, as much as you can get from watching 24 episodes in a row, over three evenings of course.
We'll it is done, and until time for the Final Four, my TV will be turned off, i need to rest.

/Wow, March really is a month of madness.

Local business rant - coffee related, of course

Went for coffee the other day. Was meeting a good friend over a cup of java. We stopped in at one of the local establishments. There was no reason to suspect somethng was amis. The magnate sign outside was bragging about their lunch specials, great to hear, but all i was really after was an engaging business discussion, and a good cup of coffee. No such luck, yet.

They were closed... for the month. And the sign on the door was so small i didn't notice until i got out of my car and walked up to the door. This is bad, and the fact that the owners have not considered this is disapointing.

Firstly: it IS annoying to go somewhere out of habit, only to find it is not open. Maintaining consistent predictable hours is a must. Basic. A sense of being let down ensues,a feeling of broken expectations. Your signs say you are open... just open up already. No problem, things happen... but for a month??? At least have the decency to take down both of the magnate signs inviting customers, save yourself this money for the coming long customer-less period you have ahead of you. i would not enjoy surveying the customers as they leave the parking lot having not been sold a coffee. No one likes to be let down. How many people refuse to go back if they are mistreated by a server or ambassador for a company? Now magnify that to every single customer who arrives over the course of the next 30 days. The lost revenue will effect your bottom line longer than your days closed... no?

And this brings me to my Second issue: What on earth are the owners thinking? Is this merely a step in their eventual giving up on their business? Is it that bad?
A month or so previous to this week, a MAJOR national competitor opened up within walking distance (and within eye-sight from the locked door of this coffee shop). In fact, that is exactly where i then sat with my friend for coffee.

It's coffee, they are both good cups of coffee, no doubt. 21 days to a habit, right? We'll a lions share of the customer base from the closed coffee shop will be forming a very strong habit, drinking coffee somewhere ELSE. How hard will the now closed business have to work, how much marketing money will they spend trying to get me back, to earn my trust again, after breaking it so recently?

WOW... i do not for a second think that i am the only person who is seeing this, am i?
i tried very hard to NOT name names on this post, tho i have no doubt that locals will know where of i speak without much deductive reasoning. Feel free to post your thoughts on this thread... this is a topic deserving of a discussion.

"Smooth" doesn't begin to describe it

That's what i'm talking about right there = "Smooth doesn't begin to describe it"... that is how i want to describe my... new mouse.
Looks like time for a new mouse. i play enough games, and get some work done too, so i'm beginning to think a new mouse will give me an edge. And an edge is a good thing, in work, and in games. (almost like a Mars bar, at work, rest & play)
Right now i am using a standard HP two button with a center wheel. My main issue is this, i am left handed, and most flashy and ergonomic mice i've seen are not designed for lefties... as such, i am leaning towards a model like this one here. The Kensington Optical Elite.
Any readers out there have a better suggestion? Memlane guys... give me a shout! (Coffee is on me)

Demographic targetting of Midget Grizzlies

How about the Redcliff Midget Grizzlies... A great case of local talent, and i'm not talking about the hockey players (this time).
Targetted Demographics is this: (What follows is a simple case study - All True)

Moments ago my door rang... A rep from the Redcliff Midget Grizzlies was at my door selling raffle tickets door to door. As good natured as i am, i usually smile and give the standard "no, thanks" or some-such. Not this time tho, these guys know their target market, me... You see, i live in an area of town so new that every drive way in the area is yet to be cemented. And for $20 i can buy one of 300 raffle ticets to win a 24 X 24 pad. I was up to my office for a check book so fast, and happy to give em the dosh too. Raffle for a swimming pool or a trip to Vegas and i am saying "no, thanks". But appeal to a very real, very immediate need, and you've created a very low barrier to my giving you cash. Kudos to these folks knowing what to offer, and who to offer it to. Maybe besides hockey, they should be lecturing for Business Development Groups too.
Raffle sponsored by: INland Concrete, Kencrete Finishing & E&B Contracting.
/ A great way to raise funds for a good cause. kudo's again.

What's up with Blogger

Anyone out there who works for Blogger.com reading this post?
I really like Blogger, the blog software company that i use for my humble blog, but as of late, it's been a little quirky.
As of writing this post, there are two copies of my Gates post on my main page. When i access my secure panel, under the *edit post - post title* column, there is only one copy of the Gates title. There WAS a second title, but i deleted that blog post, or so i thought. Still tho, i do like Blogger, and will continue on with 'em, warts and all.
This is likely a very simple fix, so if you know it, let me in on the secret, we can be clandestine together.

Gates gets his GROOVE on

"By buying out Groove Networks yesterday, Bill Gates again demonstrated his superlative business acumen. Groove had impressed Gates so much that he decided to buy the company and make its founder Ray Ozzie, his chief technical officer."

Off to a quick google search and see what else is said about this.

I like the concept, i wonder when i get a call from Pattison Outdoor Advertising... :)

Learn to speak Italian Geek

In a lunch meeting last week i was reminded that i speak geek. In a nut shell, i agree... while a group of geeks might not pick me for their math team, i get by. When it comes to digital tidbits, folks figure i know a whole lot, while those who DO know a whole lot know i need lots and lots of help. That is why i spend my days working in Marketing and Advertising (and playing some CoD:UO... go QOR!).

So imagine my delight when i found this internet resource. With this expansive archive of magazine adverts for Computer companies... we can all learn to speak *geek*... in "Italiano" no less. Good luck (Study to show yourself approved...)

/While in truth i actually own a couple of the hardware pieces for sale in these adverts, i would *love* to get my hands on one of those Data General's... wow!

I want to rent the Sound of Music

Now that i want to rent the Sound of Music, what am i supposed to do. Another Serial Entrepeneur has passed away... the internet hangs at half mast today.

Year of the Yao

How does a blade of grass thank the sun?

The Year of the Yao... i'll want to see this one. Check out the Yao sized trailer. Catchy!!!

Jules Verne & Catherine the Great

"Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real. "

Jules Verne (1828-1905)
French author

Wonderful quote... i heard a variation of this quote in Kenya recently. Catherine NDereba is the world record holder in the Marathon, and she has won the Boston Marathon many times. She told us that "What one woman can do, another woman can do" was the resolve and perspective that she had regarding her goal (and subsequent realization) of beating record after record.

From Geena Davis to Kim Cambell

How on earth do i jump from Geena Davis to Kim Cambell ?

Thanks to Drudge, it is easy. Geena Davis is set to play the first Female President... a role Kim played over 10 years ago here in Canada... for real. Always a step ahead.

Dilbert and the broken link

Thanks goes out to Jamie who, over coffee today, commented that a link here on my humble blog was broke... that darn'd interweb. Seems the chap with the collections has experienced over 100 gigs (a whole lot) of traffic in the last 4 days of Feb 2005 and his host gave him the axe, so to speak. So, upon realizing that, i swiftly re-directed my surfing to dilbert.com
no, i don't know why either, just sayin.
And now, off to review Dilberts archive.
