Matt on Air travel

Have you, like me, been wondering lately? Where the (heck) is Matt?
Last i blogged regarding Matt, and "where the (heck) he is" was back on May 12th 2005.
It's been awhile, an Matt is worth checking up on...

Matt is back in the US... and handing down his extensive wisdom born of many, many, many airline flights (around the earth).

"Here’s the big secret I’ve figured out. From what I’ve seen, no one else who’s ever boarded a plane is privy to this knowledge. Ready?...

When the plane stops moving, you don’t have to get up."
- Matt Harding Read the whole thing... funny, and true.

Pure Caffeine rant

Nathanael Boehm, of pureCaffeine rants thus: "Basically that the Internet is a totally viable reality into which you can extend yourself. Your online identity is no less “real” than your primary - regardless of how creative you’ve been with it.

The thought that sparked this is the rant that some may have heard from parents “You spend way too much time on that computer!” … sometimes perhaps even followed with “You should get out more!”.

Examining this evidence, it would appear that some in this generation who might say such things are not aware of the cultural changes that have taken place over recent years. I believe it is perfectly acceptable to state that the Internet and the online medium is just as much a reality as that away from the Internet - and those of us who spend copious amounts of time online would realise this... - perhaps one day the rant will be “You spend way too much time away from your computer!”"

Heh, i like his mood, and agree with his comments above... tho, i would: i also spend copious amounts of time on my computer... Made all the more evident after this simple little application PC Time (don't let it scare you)

Is that even possible? No, don't tell me, i'd rather go on in ignorance.

Zippy, Olympics & Flickr Uber-Post

Canadian Olympic Hide n' Seek Team: You saw it here first. i just finished uploading this great video file into my account at ZippyVideos.com
Do you recall me mentioning this site last week?. It was last saturday when i signed up for a free account, loaded three vid's (click here to see my page with all the video's i've loaded).
Besides the free online webspace they supply for archiving these files... and aside from how smooth they make sharing these vid's, i really like the point system. As i write this i have 59 points (whoo hoo). Their point system is simple, easy to grasp... and highly addicting. Or at least that is their aim. Now to wait and see how they monetize this site. (maybe they are waiting on a big payout like Flickr.com got... mentioned here, and here) Good times.

Top 100

Top 100 books for sale. Nice banner across the top... do you like? it's a great application that CoverPop has developed. Hover your mouse over the books, and the cover *pops* up for a close-up, along with purchase info. Click the book cover, and you are wisked off to amazon.com. Go shopping, i get a small percentage, you get great books to read, i get some hosting costs covered, you get great books to read. This works. Or does it. I'll let you know!

Visit CoverPop's MAD MAGAZINE Coverpop... good clean fun.

/while it has very little to do with this blog... i do love the simplicity of this poster. Clear, concise... bold and... old looking. Besides, the number 4 is my favorite number. Link

WildCam Africa

I almost feel guilty. I've been enjoying this National Geographic WebCam for a few days now. A live webcam feed watching over a watering hole in Botswana. As i type this blog entry i am watching a whole host of (insert name here) watering. Botswana looks like wonderful country. Best viewing times listed on the National Geographic site. Enjoy! (Let me know what you see).

Viacom decides to Pull not Push

Using bluetooth technology, Viacom Outdoor Advertising is poised to be the first Outdoor Advertising Firm in the US to make bluetooth content available thru their outdoor adverts. Now, with compeling info, near the purchase, they will pull customers to their place of business without pushing content onto the mobile devices (read: phones) of people who are NOT interested. No Spam. Too bad the interweb and e-mail didn't work that way. Meh.

Smart Car South Africa

Look at the outdoor advertising treatment the Smart Car gets in South Africa. Great pic. Time for some broken glass me'thinks.

RocketBoom Birthday

Happy Birthday RocketBoom. Today, the video-blog (or vlog) site RocketBoom is ONE YEAR OLD. (throws streamers into the air)... if you haven't heard the news according to Amangda Congdon where have you been all year?
Now is a good time to start.

Word of the Day

During Toastmaster meetings, we include a word of the day. Increasing our vernacular is a good thing. But why stop there, why hide that knowledge under a bushel (figuratively speaking). No, starting today i will add words of the day to jaceanderson.com . Not everyday of course, there are sites for that sort of thing. No, i will add words, as they fit... or as i need content to avoid being staid and boring, (no comment).

"There are many ways to coin words. You can make words out of thin air: googol, a word for a very large number (1 followed by 100 zeros) was coined by a nine-year-old boy. It was the inspiration behind the naming of the Google search engine.

You can redefine old words. The Google name, in turn, became genericized as a verb meaning to search for something, not necessarily on the Web."

Cardboard Case Mod

Babelfish failed me on this one. If you can translate this page, that might be nice, but ultimately, i just want to know if the layout is downloadable as a DIY (Do It Yourself).
NO? it is a fun concept, reminds me of the cardboard house i found online some time ago... (did i chipmark that page i wonder...)

Mexican Outdoor Ad Campaign

Next time you are in Mexico City, i really, really hope you see one of these signs. See one of these signs, and get me a picture! One billboard on the street has a visual of Saddam warning folks, "You can generate chaos: Don't you double park." Mother Teresa yells, "Don't give bribes to the devil!". (i really want to see pics of these.)

"The campaign by Muevete por Tu Ciudad _ roughly translated as "Do Something for Your City" _ was designed to improve everyday behavior on the streets of Mexico City" - FreeNewMexican

Outdoor advertising can be so much fun... (tho, i am biased) So, who in Canada could we use? Heck, driving quality in Medicine Hat is questionable at best... who should be use here? Chretien?

The Montreal Monster

Good time Zippy, i had to post one more video. This video was sent to me just the other day (thanks J.K.)

Renee and i rode this, or a very similar wooden track at six flags in Montreal this summer. Ours was called the Monster... this one, if different, i don't know. Good times.

Neil French the Eye of the Storm

A couple of weeks ago, Neil French sounded off on a Toronto radio show... he was sexist... and the media has not let him off the hook. As a response, one of most influencial Creative Directors in the World has resigned... Done.

"Go and do something useful. Count your socks."

Zippy Citroen C4

In May of this year i brought our attention to the Citroen C4 video, as well as the fantastic Satire spoof by x-bam. Now, after deciding that there was room in my life for a little more Zippy, i've uploaded both of the video's into ZippyVideo's free video hosting. be sure to visit both links and rate them... ahh, the interweb 2.0, such fun.

/thanks R.M. for the link

Rattlers Bball is ON

Following a meeting this evening i took in the opening game (got there just in time for second half of the mens' game). Yup, Medicine Hat College Rattlers Athletics. Game one... i look forward to many, many more. And with the low cost (and huge upside) of their season pass... i can take them all in, and so can you... see you there!!!

Next game: 10/29: MEN'S BASKETBALL vs. SAIT

GO RATTLERS!

Charles Sounds Off

Concerning the new Dress Code for the NBA... Charles Barkley "hears that Marcus Camby of the Denver Nuggets wants a stipend to buy clothes to adhere to the dress code, and Barkley cringes.

"Guys like that have lost perspective," he said. "What's he make, $8 million a year? It's like when Latrell Sprewell said he needed more than $14 million a year so that he could feed his family. Give me a break."
Zing!

i really like Charles Barkley. Really like.

Pouring Milk on the Esplanade

The Got Milk campaign in the US has taken a satirical turn. "Pouring" is the new made-up slang that Pro Baseball players are doing. These commercials that poke fun at the recent Steroids bruhaha. (bruhaha is not a word, i'm not trying to beat you at scrabble tho, it's almost tommorrow, and frankly, it just sounds good!)

"Satire's always dangerous," said Steve James, chairman of the California Milk Processor Board, which paid for the ads. "It's always on the edge. You're always risking offending people or people not getting it. But when satire works — and I think this works — you get people's attention."

Watch the Got Milk commercials here... now!

Here in Medicine Hat, Alberta... i wonder out loud (as loud as i type anyways), but i wonder outloud none the less. Who in Southern Alberta could benefit from using satire this effectively... in such a viral form. Should they? and if so, who should be the focus of the satire? The Esplanade? Comments?

Nemo Me Impune Lacessit

Chalk one up for the underdogs. Nemo me impune lacessit - "no one dare attack me with impunity" - Native Japanese Honeybee's git-r'-done.

"A small but highly efficient killing machine lurks in the mountains of Japan—the Japanese giant hornet. The voracious predator pumps out a dose of venom with an enzyme so strong it can dissolve human tissue. Just a handful of these hornets can kill 30,000 European honeybees within hours. Watch an attack of giant hornets on a beehive, and learn the surprising secret that Japanese honeybees use in their defense." - Nationalgeographic.com

Art & Office Supply

One would expect a business marketing *ART* to rely on art for their marketing message. i can only hope that their corporate identity is flashy and creative. Mind you, if that IS the case, then consistency amongst their marketing mediums would have been nice. As it is, this sign, while bold, does NOT elicit confidence in their artistic side... How do you choose to represent yourself? Are you speaking the right language? or just communicating for communications' sake.

Feels Good to be back

I was away from the computer for a good part of this weekend. Calgary was great. And now, while listening to a couple GREAT podcasts, i'm looking for outdoor advertising worthy of commenting on. Not happening. We'll, maybe this is worth commenting on "Don't Jump". Maybe.

Carnival of the Capitalists

The Carnival is up again today. Accidental Verbosity-Yay! is the host.
Here is last week's Carnival, Found at BusinessPundit. Days-old but still good, unlike the loaf of bread i bought last week. grrr. (toast it, they said)

Intermittent

"intervals of complete quietude occurring between two periods of activity." - Dictionary.com

This last week has felt like complete quietude. Blogging has been non-existant... i have been working thru a new project that relates to being online, and i look forward to blogging that. Once a couple more kinks are worked out. Suffice it to say that this can be a fun project, and a worthy process, either way.

I'll be in Calgary this weekend... blogging to become the second part of two periods of activity as soon as i return.

Art becomes Advertising

OR advertising becomes art.
I'll let you decide which is which, or... as recollection of my Art History class went... if it was even possible to say that advertising could *ever* become art. (answer is subjective... and yes)
Regardless of your view regarding the above topic...
i blogged here a couple days ago regarding the planned opening of an advertising museum in the US. Now, closely on the heels of that post, i want to draw your attention to this functioning Museum. look at this amazing online resource:

"The Edo Era (1603—1867)... That Japan had already developed distinctive advertising techniques of its own as early as the Edo Era might come as a surprise to you... as a chronicle of advertising creative work in Japan, these relics represent a valuable record... Dentsu Advertising Museum presents selected advertising artifacts and works of art from the Yoshida Hideo Memorial Foundation collection." - DENTSU Advertising Museum

Tech Savvy or Geek

I'll let you decide... tho i am likely a little of both. (more geek than tech tho... sadly)

18 days ago i downloaded a neat bit of software. i didn't blog about it then, if i blogged about everything that i downloaded... you'd likely get bored and tired of my ranting and raving. Suffice it to say: Over the last 18 days i have come to appreciate this littel app. And now, now that i lean heavily on it as opposed to my own finite memory, i've upgraded. Uped the ante so to speak. No more trial period for me... i've gone PRO. And i love it.

ROBOform... while it doesn't mow your lawn, what it DOES it does well.

Nigerian 419 REFUND

Pigs are flying... There is a place that is actually freezing over, as i type this.
We've all received the Nigerian scams by email... some of us even remember getting the very same letters by fax, long before the interweb took off. Suddenly, all is right in the world once again:

"...woman who lost millions of dollars to Nigerian fraudsters has been repaid, Nigeria's anti-corruption body says... Nigeria's e-mail conmen are notorious and are known as 419er, after a Nigerian anti-fraud law. They use mass e-mails to trick people into parting with money." - BBC NEWS Africa

/Maybe this means that, while the conmen have been stopped, the next offer you receive could finally be honest. Or not... watch for it.

BAM... i'm married

"Computer-Free Night

Remember that movement in the '80's to spend a night with your family and turn off the TV? I think it was called "no-tv" nights or "Turn-off-the-TV" nights.

I think we should start one for computers and online access. I didn't have a home computer for a night...and BAM I found out I'm married. Seriously. We had a great time last night, laughing, playing, talking...no distractions from any possible online activity.

I love online stuff: blogs and podcasts and music, all that. But still...there is that concept called "3-d" reality as opposed to the 2-dimensional online version. And it's richer, more tangible, more varied, too. (It's 3-D...)

So, let's start a movement for NO COMPUTER NIGHTS. We'll start slow. One night a month; Then one a week.

Who knows? The next night I might find I have children?!?"

/Unsettling concept. Seriously.

Calling Out Richard Munro

I have had the pleasure of coffee'ing with Richard Munro in the past, and i look forward to many more in the future. Excellent discussions are always a result. On Thursday i posted a commentary regarding Ajax that R.M. provided.
Richard, i am calling you out... you have a voice, an intellect and perspective that folks will read! Get on with it man.
Having read the article, again, and learned something, again, i (like others who read his letter) are convinced that we truly are within winds of change. Although not about Ajax particularly, this post is intended to be a *Call to Arms* from one weathered old blogger to a shining spot for the future of the web. WEB 2.0 even. Dropping the haughty vernacular... all i mean to say is that Richard Munro should be Tech blogging. Sure, include snippets of life, it's those endearing comments that build relationship. But for the love of all things pure, simple and futuristic... BLOG man, blog!

/And if you refuse to blog, consider podcasting?

Winds of Change, Ajax

i received this email from a friend... read this thru:

"A major shift is upon, and it is going to drastically change how we use our computers. A new programming language has emerged recently, and it will revolutionize the industry.

Ajax is actually not a “new” language, it is a combination of 3 older programming languages (XML, Java and JavaScript) that have been brought together to create a powerful web application. Ajax enables a company to stream information to the end-use without refreshing the webpage. Popular examples that use Ajax are Google maps and flickr.

Why is this so major? Ajax enables companies/programmers to create entire programs that can be run from your web browser as quickly as they are run from your hard drive. For example, you can have a word processor program that is run entirely from your web browser and saved online. This way, you don’t have to purchase a $500 program that can only be accessed on one computer. With free, open source online programs, you can edit your documents from any internet connection. You can collaborate on proposals/WebPages/documents etc. with other people, in real-time over the internet.

We now have our desktop at home, our laptop to carry around with us, our PDA and our computer at work. If your not connected to the internet, you can find a free wireless connection within 5 minutes of anywhere in the city. Why not have all your calendars/tasks/schedules editable and updateable from a webpage that can be accessed from (almost) anywhere on any computer independent of OS/Program/Browser. It is truly possible now. Think of this as an extremely powerful, flexible thin client.

Microsoft is very worried. They have feared that this could happen for years now; this is a major reason why they went after Netscape so hard and fast. Their fears are starting to materialize extremely quickly in the last couple months.

Google is the company than can give Microsoft a run for there money and today announced that between them and Sun, they are going to offer a browser based spreadsheet and word processor.

Things are about to drastically change.

Carnival of the Capitalists

Capitalist's like their Carnivals. i like their Carnivals too. enjoy!
